Well Written f

Downloading it for myself, I really found Cat's one star review to be a bit needlessly hurtful and bitter. The author gives us a free gift, why spit upon her bitterly? Something that has always irritated me on Amazon is the way some people casually throw out one-star reviews for pet disappointments that have nothing to do with the quality of the book. Seriously, some folks would one-star Shakespeare if they woke up on the wrong side of the bed... (not that he wouldn't deserve it here and there. I mean, look at Titus Andronicus..)
Anyway, my review. The story is an interesting interpretation of the story of Sir Gawain in the King Arthur myths; an imaginative vision of a Romano-Celtic background to King Arthur's legends. Where the supernatural or mystical touches it's not done in a heavy handed way. The result is something between Historical Fiction and Epic Fantasy, all packaged in a novella sized story, and padded at the end with an excerpt from her first novel in the series (Yseult).
Ruth Nestvold is an enjoyable author. This book is well crafted, and in any case it was free (need I repeat that again). Unlike a lot of free stuff on Kindle, here is quite good storytelling. Nestvold is a good weaver of words, and clearly comes from a place of real research. The novella is rich with historical details, so much so that one forgets that the author is writing fiction, basically making a story up against a background of possible past realities, and you find yourself immersed in what seems to be, and feels like, a true world of the past.
One fault, for some readers, is a slow build-up. It is faster paced than Yseult was, but shorter. Her story develops a bit slowly, and it builds slowly, but this need not be a fault for those who like slower paced works, and it is a bit slower paced, with lots of sensate and visual prose. In a way it makes it more immersive.
The characters are multi dimensional in their emotions and motivations. Ragnell has, in grim circumstances, almost a sense of humor to her, there is a tragic aura about her, for reasons that become clear, and it adds to the dimensions of the character.
This story, like Yseult, is laden with historical details, which gives a palpable taste of the old Roman/Briton and Gaelic Celtic worlds of the British Isles at the end of Antiquity, passing into the Dark Ages. Moreover, in this world of Britain in which the Word is revered as a carrier of might and power, the author's prose itself is magical. In Eiru and Britain words had magical power. She manages to wield a magic of words here. I can *feel* and *see* the author's characters and scenes, which is no mean feat. It's well written with evocative prose.
On magic, it's handled well here, in a way that blurs the distinction between Fantasy and Historical Fiction. Magic is handled in a plausible way, of perceptions and illusions, and a subtle psychic influence.
Another fault, for me - I tire of the whole theme of the loss of the Old Ways of a Noble Pagan world. The author is very light-handed with this theme, she doesn't pound it in (unlike in Yseult which over-brims with it) and she does depict a more nuanced Britain in the early days of Christianity there. Now the "passing of the old ways" theme and the descent into a "Christian dark age" has been done to death, for decades before Nestvold's writing. In the books in which she deals with the theme more directly at least she somehow manages to evoke it in a fresh way. Here it seems in the background, not the foreground, and it doesn't overwhelm the tale. Historically I think things were more complex. But that's neither here nor there.
Overall I recommend it.

Wow what a fantastic job this author did of creating a world and pulling us right into it. The actual meeting of Ragnell and Gawain was very interesting through this authors eyes and very believable. These characters were crafted so wonderfully, even though I would have enjoyed a little longer story, it was written very well.

I downloaded this story for two reasons. 1. It is a retelling of the Arthurian legend of Ragnell and Gawain (which is my favorite and not written about nearly enough) 2. It was free. So there was no risk.
What I liked about was the interesting twist the author put on the tale, where Ragnell and Gawain meet differently. The action scenes were clearly written and easy to picture.
Why I gave the book three stars was for the fact that sometimes I was taken out of the story by an odd turn of phrase. It would just stop me for a minute a ruin the moment. Plus I disagreed with how the aftermath of rape was handled but that is more a personal quibble and others may not agree.
Overall not bad. Thank you to the author for sharing this story with us!
