About the Author
Carlos Díaz received a BSc from the University of Chile, an MSc from Columbia University, and a PhD from the Imperial College of the University of London. He taught chemical thermodynamics and extractive metallurgy at the University of Chile, where he also held the positions of Head of the Department of Mines and Director of the School of Engineering. In 1975, he joined Inco Limited, where he was responsible for research leading to new copper and nickel smelting and converting processes. He retired from Inco in 1997. At present, Dr. Díaz is Director of the Centre for Chemical Process Metallurgy, an industry-university research organization based at the University of Toronto, where he is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He is also a private consultant. He is a past-president of the Metallurgical Society of CIM, a fellow of CIM and a member of TMS and the Chilean Institute of Mining Engineers. He is the author or co-author of a book on the thermodynamic properties of copper-slag systems, about 50 technical papers and 15 patents of invention, and co-editor of numerous international conference proceedings, including several of the COPPER–COBRE series of conferences. Dr. Díaz is the recipient of a number of Chilean, Canadian and American awards.
Carlos Landolt graduated from the University of Chile as a mining engineer and continued his studies at Pennsylvania State University where he obtained an MSc in metallurgy and PhD in materials sciences. He then taught extractive metallurgy and carried out research at the Department of Mines of the University of Chile and was the first Executive Director of the Centro de Investigación Minera y Metalúrgica. Dr Landolt joined Inco Limited in 1974, becoming Technical Superintendent at the Copper Cliff Smelter and later Superintendent of Process Technology for Ontario Division. Retired from Inco since 1999, he is now an adjunct professor in the School of Engineering of Laurentian University where he teaches operations management, process management and productivity and is involved in the development of distance education programs in operations management. He has participated in all the COPPER–COBRE Conferences since 1987 as author, Organizing Committee member or co-editor of the proceedings. He has also organized several TMS-sponsored conferences and symposia on nickel and copper processing and been co-editor of several volumes of proceedings. Dr Landolt is the author or co-author of more than 30 papers and patents in process metallurgy and productivity. Torstein Utigard is currently a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Toronto where he holds the Gerald R. Heffernan chair in materials processing. After receiving an undergraduate science degree from Oslo University in 1981, he obtained a PhD in metallurgy from the University of Toronto in 1985. He worked, from 1985 to 1987, in Switzerland as a research engineer for Swiss Aluminium Ltd and, from 1987 to 1989, at the metallurgical technology centre of Falconbridge Ltd, in Falconbridge, Canada. He is a former chairman of the non-ferrous pyrometallurgy committee of the Metallurgical Society of CIM. He has published over 100 scientific and technical papers and patents, for which he has received several international best paper awards. In his role as professor, he has graduated more than 15 masters and PhD students.
