Execution by Hunger: The Hidden Holocaust, by Miron Dolot

Seven million people in the "breadbasket of Europe" were deliberately starved to death at Stalin's command. This story has been suppressed for half a century. Now, a survivor speaks.

In 1929, in an effort to destroy the well-to-do peasant farmers, Joseph Stalin ordered the collectivization of all Ukrainian farms. In the ensuing years, a brutal Soviet campaign of confiscations, terrorizing, and murder spread throughout Ukrainian villages. What food remained after the seizures was insufficient to support the population. In the resulting famine as many as seven million Ukrainians starved to death.

This poignant eyewitness account of the Ukrainian famine by one of the survivors relates the young Miron Dolot's day-to-day confrontation with despair and death―his helplessness as friends and family were arrested and abused―and his gradual realization, as he matured, of the absolute control the Soviets had over his life and the lives of his people. But it is also the story of personal dignity in the face of horror and humiliation. And it is an indictment of a chapter in the Soviet past that is still not acknowledged by Russian leaders.

The Other Twentieth Century Holocust!
By nadia cervantes
Author Miron Dolot has my gratitude for writing a book about his unbelievable experiences in the Ukrain during the great famine of the early 1930's. My own father also lived through this famine, escaped to Germany and finally made his home in the United Staves. While my father retold some of his experiences, they were usually too painful for him to discuss. This book, therefore, provided me with the missing pieces of my family's history. Also, it acknowledged to the world that there was more than one holocaust during the twentieth century. Dolot's well written book, while autobiographical, was objective and amazing in its detail. Finally, this book was a lesson in good and evil. The Communists were relentless in their goal to destroy, humiliate and torture the Ukrainian farmers. In spite of this, the ordinately farm family found it in their hearts to help their fellow man whenever their physical strength and meager resources allowed them to do so.

Holodomor Moralilty Tale
By Andrew M. Klein
Published in 1985, Execution By Hunger is a simplistic, but terrifying personal account of Ukrainian rural life under the Communists as it was destroyed by "collectivization" and the systematic starvation of its population from 1930-1933. Peasants, including the family of the then anonymous author (Simon Starrow, now deceased), are portrayed as unsophisticated, helpless victims of armed unfeeling and ever- grasping Communist bureaucrats and thugs. The only real problem with it is that it actually happened and that so many of us still know very little if anything about it.

There are now many accounts of the Holodomor. This one, though thin on historical background, cannot fail to move any reader new to the pre-WWII mass killing of millions of Ukrainians by Stalin. An earlier account,The Black Deeds of the Kremlin: A White Book, published in Canada by Ukrainian emigres in 1953, followed by yet a second volume in 1955, went unnoticed by scholars for reasons that escape me. (Did we have a serious period of Stalin worship here in the 1950's that led us away from believing reports about his atrocities, this one being his largest, if not the largest in recorded history? Perhaps. He and the Russians did help win the war, after all -- and even now many of us continue to flirt with idealistic visions of how much better things would be if only we could live in a socialist world. The latter would do well to read this little book.) The more recent, more widely read account, The Harvest of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivization and the Terror-Famine by Conquest, published in 1986, finally awoke us to what was actually done to Ukraine by its Soviet rulers in the early 1930's, though even now there is lingering resistance to acceptance of the idea that it was purposeful instead of some unfortunate, seasonal agricultural accident.

The author either did not understand or did not care to spend time on the reasons for the Soviets' collective farm efforts, their irrational Five Year Plan-type grain production ambitions, and the Stalinist regime's fear of Ukrainian nationalist aspirations, all part of what gave rise to the Holodomor. But you could look it up.

This is a first-hand account from a survivor of the Ukrainian famine. It is dark and at times unpleasant to read, but well written and an important glimpse into a part of history most of the world seems to have forgotten. I personally found this somewhat comparable (though less poetic) than Solzhenitsyn.
