Bought The EDI for the Health Care

I had my employer purchase the other book they wrote (for the health care) so I think they are pretty similar. I do not think it's worth it. All there is in the book is some screenshots and the texts are mostly from MSDN and other MS documents. I am trying to find a real good BizTalk book but can't, I mean a book like those that I have for Oracle, by Tom Kyte (by they way Tom Kyte helps write a lot of the Oracle docs so he just refers his readers to those docs and does not copy them again in his books).

Since working with BizTalk for several years in the supply chain management Industry, there have been several occasions where I have needed some sort of guidance. Finally there is something out there!! After searching for an adequate guide I have stumbled upon this book and it provides me with just the answers I need. It is compact enough that I don’t need to trudge around thousands of pages of information. It is short and to the point, this is one of my favorite things about this book.

I Believe That "Miracles Do Happen!"

As an avid reader, writer, editor, and writing coach, I am always on the lookout for literature that feeds my hefty literary appetite. Boring books and topics always irritate me and cause me to put the book down, never to be read again. However, when I read 'Miracles Do Happen,' something moved in me that I could not readily explain. I was so moved by it, I had to start studying about miracles for myself.

Human factors and usability issues have traditionally played a limited role in security research and secure systems development. About the Author

Dr. Lorrie Faith Cranor is an Associate Research Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. She is a faculty member in the Institute for Software Research, International and in the Engineering and Public Policy department. She is director of the CMU Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (CUPS).

Simson Garfinkel is a journalist, entrepreneur, and international authority on computer security. Garfinkel is chief technology officer at Sandstorm Enterprises, a Boston-based firm that develops state-of-the-art computer security tools.

Users Are Not the Enemy

I make Web applications for a living. Our team strives to make them usable. I have always preferred to leave security to the security professional. Maybe that's not working. I suspect there are a lot of other GUI designers, usability folk, project managers, business analysts, and product managers out there arriving at the same conclusion.

Have you felt the frustration of working through client interviews, screen reviews, team discussions and iterations of tests to make the most usable possible application -- only to learn that users stumble time and again even getting to your product? User authentication and authorization complaints rank right at the top in most help staff logs. This book may provide some alternatives to passive acceptance of things as they are.

It is hard to summarize a 750 page book with over 60 contributors. There is a lot here for a broad range of interests. Yes, some chapters have a load of mind-numbing jargon, but as a whole, this material is very approachable by the professions I mentioned above. Many of the contributors are from the ranks of the same professions. Stats are mixed with anecdotes in an interesting way.

Bruce Tognazzini's "Design for Usability" was a personal favorite -- and so was the chapter on designing the interface to ZoneAlarm, a product familiar to most.

If there is one theme that unites all the contributions, it is expressed in the title of Ch. 32: "Users Are Not the Enemy." Amen to that.

Security Should *NOT* Be About Inconvenience

"Security is about inconvenience". This what the national Lotus Notes manager for a federal agency said to me last January at Lotusphere 2005. We were discussing their policy to block all incoming zip files at the gateway without telling users what formats would be acceptable as mail attachments. I disagreed with him then and I find that I am not alone. In "Security and Usability: Designing Secure Systems That People Can Use" (Lorrie Faith Cranor and Simon Garfinkel (Ed), 2005, 716 pages, ISBN 0596008279), O'Reilly has assembled a comprehensive and far-reaching set of 34 essays that challenges commonly held beliefs of the information security community and provides a solid basis to open new dialogues about the trade-offs between security and usability of systems. Without a doubt, it is now on my recommendation list of "must read" books for the information security, application development, system administration, and IT audit communities.

The book is broken down into six sections. In the first, "Realigning Usability and Security", the reader is presented with five essays which hammer home the point that if security of applications and systems are not made user friendly, the users can and will find ways to bypass them. This may range from doing whatever they can to bypass the controls put in place to not using the systems at all. The next section, "Authentication Mechanisms", covers topics that include the evaluation of authentication mechanisms, the problems of passwords, challenge questions, biometrics and more.

The third section, "Secure Systems", covers specific issues associated wit the use of PKI, the sanitizing of equipment being disposed, desktop security, and security administration tools/practices. From here, the fourth section, "Privacy and Anonymity Systems", deals with the challenging topic of privacy. The essays in this section focus on human-computer interaction, policies, analysis and more.

The fifth section, "Commercializing Usability: The Vendor Perspective", sealed the deal from me. Why? Because it allowed the book to grow beyond a purely academic discussion to a discussion of real world challenges faced and addressed by vendors. The vendors selected - ZoneAlarm, Firefox, Microsoft, IBM/Lotus, and the now 'defunct' Groove Networks - are important because each vendor addresses important issues in strong security and IT governance as collaboration becomes more important.

The final section, "The Classics", provides 3 essays focusing on users not being the enemy, a study of KaZaA, and why people cannot encrypt.

Who Should Read This Book

The discussions presented in this book need to be discussed, even debated, if advances in the field are going to occur. And this debate should not be limited to the IT security community. This is because security is everyone's responsibility. As I said at the beginning of this review, I consider this book to be a "must read" for the information security, application development, system administration, and IT audit communities.

Great overview with surprising amount of detailed coverage

Security and Usability; pick one at the expense of the other is the story we've all heard time and again. More secure systems are harder to use; for example longer secure passwords are harder to remember than shorter, more easily guessed ones.

In the real world it has been recently noticed that when security "gets in the way"; it is often circumvented by the users. For example, systems that "upgrade security" by requiring lengthy passwords often result in sticky notes appearing as people begin to write their passwords down. The book explores a number of topics from the perspective that improved usability can enhance the real world security of a system.

The chapters are written by different authors and grouped around related topics. It's hard to pull off these kinds of books well, but I believe this one succeeds. I put the chapters into three categories; talking points, patterns I can use, and presentations.

Talking point chapters help me explain to others how improving usability can improve security; examples include "Usable Security" and "Design for Usability". Patterns I can use chapters present a framework for evaluating different approaches to common security problems; such as evaluating authentication mechanisms. Presentation chapters discuss a particular topic presenting pros and cons, such as "Identifying Users from Their Type Patterns" or "Informed Consent by Design".

I enjoyed reading this book. If you're considering buying or designing a secure system I recommend checking it out.

Utter bunk but interesting on every page

This book, a reprint of Edward Heron-Allen's "Violin Making As It Was an Is," of 1884 is a very poor choice if you don't know the fundamentals of violin making and you really want to learn. For that, you should start with Simone Sacconi's `The "Secrets" of Stradivari,' probably the single most influential book of the past 30 years (available in Dipper's English or Adelmann's German translation from specialist online booksellers, but not, alas, from Amazon.com). If you are an amateur who wants to make an instrument, try one or more of Henry Strobel's books.

That said, "Violin Making As It Was an Is" is still quite an interesting book. Edward Heron-Allen was a rather brilliant Victorian polymath who had an intense interest in the violin. Somehow, he convinced the distinguished French violin maker George Chanot, then working in England, to show him how to build an instrument. The next thing Chanot knew, and apparently to his intense dismay, Heron-Allen was publishing what he had learned in a magazine intended for gentleman amateurs. His book is based on those articles.

What we have, then, is information about 19th-century French violin making reported through the filter of a talented English amateur. From this perspective, the most interesting part to me was the chapter on using a French outer form. I was also curious about the descriptions of tools and some odd older building techniques such as gluing linen to the sides before bending.

If you do read the book, you should certainly be aware that most of it is utter bunk. At the same time, I find something interesting on almost every page and quite enjoy the author's energetic style. Despite it's strange take on the craft, "Violin Making As It Was and Is" has also had a lot of influence, especially on earlier generations of English makers, who in a time before the proliferation of violin-making schools, made profitable use of what it had to offer.

Another reviewer mentioned the quip about this being "Violin Making as it Wasn't and Isn't" and that is certainly just. I would merely add Pliny the Elder's remark that there is "no book so bad but that some good might be got out of it."

Difficult to do justice

This volume certainly qualifies as one of those rare gems which holds a special place in your bookcase or shop. Heron-Allen manages to give complete detail to all facets of preparation and construction, in addition to holding the reader's attention through numerous footnotes and sidelines. A detailed technical book written in a very enjoyable fashion, and with a style no longer seen. I've been known to read this book on several occasions for pure joy.

This book covers everything from wood selection to finish. Includes full size plans for molds. The author also gives specifications of select Stradivarius violins. A must for any builders library!

About the Author

David Mantus worked in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry for more than 20 years. He not only served as vice president of regulatory affairs at Cubist Pharmaceuticals but also held various regulatory roles at Sention Inc., Shire Biologics, PAREXEL, the Massachusetts Public Health Laboratory, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals. He received his BS in chemistry from the College of William and Mary, his MS and Ph.D in chemistry from Cornell University, and was a post-doctoral research fellow in biomedical engineering at the University of Washington. He is currently associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences and director, regulatory affairs at MCPHS University in Boston.

Douglas J. Pisano received his Ph.D in law, policy, and society from Northeastern University. He has participated on the editorial advisory boards of multiple journals and received the Special Service Award for the Enhancement of Regulatory Education from the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society. A registered pharmacist and active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society, he formerly served as dean of the School of Pharmacy–Boston and is currently professor of pharmacy administration, vice-president of academic affairs, and provost at MCPHS University in Boston.

Great Reference Text

This book has proven, thus far, to be the best reference source I have come across as a student pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Regulatory Affairs. I would highly recommend this book for all students in a Regulatory Affairs program of study. Wish I would have known about this book when I first started the program.

Below expectations

I was not satisfied by this book.

First of all, in the chapters there are many repetitions of the same Topics. For instance, the same concept of GMP is repetead across the different chapters, wasting pages and making the Reader bored.
This is because each chapter was written by a different Person. So my understanding is that the Editors failed to harmonize the Contents across the book.
Moreover, some Topics like a Medical Device PMA are not deeply discussed, and this is by far the most complex aspect of the regulations that me as buyer I was expecting.
Finally, the book does not have Workflows to simplify the understanding as well as Examples. Would have been very useful if, for instance, the authors take the example of a recent Approved drug or device and explain more in Details how to do it.

PS: In the book you find much more space on the drugs than for device/biologics.
So, be carefull of what is your interest.

There are better books out there

I was required to purchase this as the assigned textbook for a graduate course. I have not read all of it yet, but have read at least four chapters already. This book contains generally good information; however, it really could have benefited from better editing. It contains numbers of grammatical mistakes and some sections read as if they were first written in another language and then translated into English. The way the chapters have been ordered also strikes me as somewhat illogical. Not the best book I have purchased on this subject.

Tienkuo

I enjoyed the novel immensely--it's a fun and exciting read. The author gets the big things right--the terrible violence and corruption of the Taipings in their late stages, the disgust of many Westerners for Chinese customs, and the unusual determination and stubbornness it took for those Chinese and Westerners alike who stuck with the Taipings, or in the case of Westerners, those who stayed to pursue a career in China. I trust the typos and minor grammatical problems get corrected for the digital edition--it certainly deserves a really clean copy.

An odyssey in old China

Masterfully interweaving history, culture, and characters, TIENKUO takes readers on a fascinating journey through 19th century China. It was a time of imperialism, trade, drug, and feudal wars. We are introduced to a variety of people caught in the vice of history. The adventures and love of an American missionary's son and an alluring woman named Black Jade are the focal points, but along the way we meet soldiers and mercenaries, warlords and rogues, merchants and nobles. And we are escorted through a little-known, exotic, and compelling time and place.
This book can be read by teenagers, young adults or adults for either entertainment or educational purposes. Students and teachers of Asian studies or Asian-American relations can especially benefit from it. History truly is made of the lives of the many small people caught in its great movements. TIENKUO gives us a delicious taste of a little known time and place and makes history come to life.

Delightfully surprised!

I must admit that I have avoided reading books with an Asian theme, merely because there is too much western culture and history that I have not yet caught up with. I picked up "Tienkuo: The Heavenly Kingdom" almost reluctantly. My hesitation lasted one page before I was swept away with the compelling and engaging story. I was captivated with this adventure from beginning to end. To add to my delight, I came away realizing that I had been given insight into an historical event, so not only was I richly entertained, but I was cleverly educated as well. What more could I ask from a book? My only regret is that Li Bo has not written more. I am certain there are more great tales to tell lurking in the guise of dry historical facts.

About the Author

Glyn Davis is Chancellor’s Fellow and Reader in the School of Design at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is the co-editor, with Gary Needham, of Warhol in Ten Takes (2013), and the author of monographs on Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (2009) and Far from Heaven (2011).

Kay Dickinson is an Associate Professor of Film Studies at Concordia University, Canada. She is the editor of Movie Music: A Film Reader (2002) and the author of Off Key: When Film and Music Won't Work Together (2008).

Lisa Patti is an Assistant Professor in the Media and Society Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Amy Villarejo is Professor in the Department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. Her books include Ethereal Queer (2014), Film Studies: The Basics, second edition (2013), and Lesbian Rule: Cultural Criticism and the Value of Desire (2003).

Great, common-sense ideas and goals for troubled times with some humor thrown in!

I found this book to be really helpful in terms of setting some reasonable goals for myself while coming out of my own "era of overspending". Well-written and often humorous, the author manages to convey the importance of saving without being a bore or being unrealistic about what's possible today. While I certainly don't find myself in ideal financial shape right now, the ratios have provided me with great goals to work toward, and helped me be conscious of where my money goes and what I'd like (and will need) it to be able to do for me later.

Sensible, thoughtful, and filled with common sense approaches

Kudos to the writer for making it so clear and within everyone's reach to be successful with finances. As more people read this work, we will slowly resolve the problem of financial dependency so pervasive in society today. This work should be found in the self-help area of bookstores. It is an easy read and a definite entry point for everyone seeking basic financial awareness.

Mr. Farrell offers a very clear explanation of how everyone should address financial issues. If more people had read this book prior to the phenomenal crisis we currently endure, none would have lost their homes, their cars, or their job. Private industry and banks would not have fired anyone, instead they would still be hiring more workers. We would remain the pillar of financial strength that irresponsible behavior destroyed.

The author's argument places the financial responsibility for our future needs squarely on each of us. He provides the reader with a blueprint for the meeting of long-term financial goals. His philosphical position is almost a Libertarian argument--except for the acceptance of Social Security as a pillar of virtue, which most Libertarians would argue against, especially in light of the abuses perpetrated by the ever-increasing waves of pillagers in Congress. Nonetheless, his suggested cures for the ills of the system as we face them today are sensible and should be heeded with immediacy.

The work is well conceived, albeit a tad repetitive at times, yet understandably so; most individuals tend to forget from one minute to the next the importance of thoughtful financial planning and a strict adherence to a plan. It all revolves around the notion of becoming a capitalist who lives by lending money to others instead of remaining a laborer forever who must do some type of work to live from its wages. It addresses the most salient points for financial solvency at any age: education, home ownership, credit card debt, and transportation, all within the money ratios that are the focus of his work.

"Charlie," as he often refers to himself in the book, provides a clear path to the financial success that most careful planners would dream to accomplish as they traverse across the different stages of life. The goal in the end is to target funds for retirement, when most expect to kick back and enjoy a better and more relaxing lifestyle, free of FICA contributions and lower taxation in general. Sacrifices and difficult decisions must be made along the way; but in the end, the work's solutions are fruitful and conducive to a successful outcome. If carefully adhered to individually with rigor and stalwart determination, the book's premises will result in a self-reliant retirement plan that would benefit more than the individual and his family.

Finally, financial planning that makes sense!

For years I have struggled to figure out what my family should be doing with our finances. I knew I wanted to be able to retire with a decent lifestyle, but had no idea how to do it. The primary reason I struggled is because of my deep distain for anything having to do with numbers. It all just seemed too difficult for me. When I read this book, it all became clear to me. Everything is laid out in clear and simple terms in a way that even a financial dim-wit like me can understand. Unfortunately for me, I read this book about 20 years too late! The good news is that I still have some time to get back on track, and I can't feel too guilty, because the book just came out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a clear and simple formula for planning for retirement. I would also recommend that you give this book as a graduation gift to anyone you care about who is graduating from college! Having this book then would have made a big difference in my financial future.
