Disappointing Prelude

“Woof” introduced Bowser and Birdie, two likable characters who shared an implausible adventure involving a stolen map. It seemed geared to upper elementary age children but even that level of reading sophistication might have found the story silly.

Unfortunately Birdie repeatedly disobeyed or ignored authorities to accomplish her goals. She also never took any responsibility for the illegality of her actions. All in all, Birdie was not a very positive portrayal of a “latch-key” kid.

Bowser’s role as the storyteller might be a fresh approach to young readers but seemed worn after reading Quinn’s Chet and Bernie stories. If “Woof” is a prelude to further adventures, I hope new, positive adult role models will emerge for Birdie.

Best novel from the point of view of a dog

Best novel from the point of view of a dog that I've ever read. Quinn creates a fascinating, believable mystery novel about a young girl and her grandmother struggling to keep their Cajun country bait shop from getting crushed by a ruthless competitor. The girl and her dog don't do anything that strains believability - the dog, especially, remains within dog-land with everything he actually does. Meanwhile, though, the dog remains a wonderfully witty narrator in spite of, or because of, all the things about human society that he doesn't understand. We enjoy the dog because of his voice, and come to love him for his fierce loyalty. I loved this book as an adult reader; the children I know who have read it love it, if anything, more.

Not just for kids

I am almost a senior citizen, but I loved this book. I have all the Chet and Bernie novels, but I liked this one as well, maybe better. It's very similar - Bowser could be Chef's twin brother - but there's no profanity and very little violence. Birdie is a likable character, and the plot was more detailed than I expected. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series, and plan on purchasing several copies of "Woof" for my friends - both children and adults!

About the Author
The author, Richard Cary Phillips was born in Starkville, MS, on April 5, 1934. He graduated from Auburn University in 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Later he obtained his Professional Engineer's Licenses in the states of Georgia and Alabama. His interest in so-called "Flying Saucers" started in 1968, when a "Flying Saucer" flew down from the sky as he and his son were outside their home, and stopped directly over their heads at a distance of no more than 25 feet. After years of study and research, he "reverse engineered" the so-called "Flying Saucer" and received two (2) patents from the US Patent office depicting the three (3) separate propulsion systems of the so-called "Flying Saucer.'' These patents are located in this book and are as follows: "Ion Impulse Engine" - Patent No. US 7,634,903 B2, and "Ion Repulsion Turbine" No. US 5,005,361, which will produce energy when the propulsion principle of the so-called "Flying Saucer" is utilized to generate high velocity ions to strike turbine blades connected to a common shaft.

About the Author
Inspector Ken Wharfe, MVO, was personal protection officer to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, in charge of round-the-clock security service at home and abroad, from 1987 until 1993. He retired from the Metropolitan Police in 2002, after thirty-five years' service, nearly half of it in royalty protection.

Interesting Comments About Diana's Life

Ken Warfe's book about Diana Princess of Wales was one of the more balanced and interesting accounts that I have read about her life from 1987 through the mid 90's. He was Diana's body guard provided by Scotland Yard and at one point considered himself to be close confidant for Diana in a professional way. His account neither condones or disapproves of her conduct but objecively describes her life at the time. In it, he tells about her affairs with James Hewitt, James Gilbey and Oliver Hoare yet doesn't divulge seamy details that he may have been aware of. He does a fine job of describing what Diana's life was like at that time in the royal family and how her some of her choices were effected by Prince Charles actions, particulary, his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. He doesn't make excuses for Diana's actions some of which are very immature but impartially describes the scene and the people involved. Wharfe doesn't deny that his job was difficult at times. In fact, he is very open about Diana's complex character. He describes a woman who can be very difficult yet fun to be with, manipulating and needy yet extremely caring and selfless, a person obsessed with being in the spotlight yet wanting a "normal" life. I felt that her bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, captured her life for that time period in a well thought out, easy to read and balanced presentation about one of the most fascinating people of this century.

Finally, equilibrium!!!

I just finished reading Ken Wharfe's wonderful account of his time with Princess Diana. I have read over sixty books on the royal family and this, by far, seems to be the most balanced account of Diana. I never had the opportunity to meet her but I knew that she could not have been as 'off balance' as much as has been presented in the past. Catherine Walker mentioned in her book that Diana had a wonderful sense of humor and Ken Wharfe expounds on that to give us examples of what she found funny and how lighthearted she could be at times. I also was not surprised that she could be a handful at times. While the world knows her past, her indescretions and some of her pain, she never let the British public down when it came to representing the royal family. It always amazed me that she could go from being with the most destitute of people, showing her caring for them, and then be at the most extravagant parties looking as though she was comfortable at both ends of the spectrum. One of the most eye-opening parts of the book is the difference of the protection officer from Scotland Yard and the protection offered by the Al Fayed family. It didn't occur to me until I read this that Mr. Wharfe had the opportunity to stop whatever may have come into play if it could possibly affect the safety of the Princess. He could do so directly with her without having to answer to the royal family since he worked for Scotland Yard. The Al Fayed protection team was hampered by the fact that they worked for their boss and I suppose their primary objective was to make all parties happy along with security and trying to keep their jobs all at the same time. It turned out to be a tragic combination. This is a well balanced book on Diana and Charles. It shows all sides and I hope that someday William and Harry will read it and realize that the author had compassion for their mother and father. I truly believe Mr. Wharfe had the best interest of the Princess in mind when he put pen to paper. I do believe she would have been proud.

Perhaps the best of the Diana books

Of the various Diana tell-all books that have come out, this may be the best, with the added advantage that the passage of time gives some historical perspective. Inspector Ken Wharfe was a police officer assigned as 'personal protection officer' to Princess Diana's sons, and later to Diana herself, from 1986 to 1997. He left that post following a nasty argument with Diana over, of all things, whether Diana could park in a no-parking zone when she wanted to buy some CDs.
The book operates on two levels, both as a chronicle of crucial events in Diana's bumpy personal and professional life from a relatively objective angle, as well as insight into how the London police protect the royal family. For most of the book, Wharfe is highly positive about Diana, describing her uncanny knack for relating to the needy, and he is critical of Charles. The author argues that tales of her being psychotic are highly exaggerated. Despite his spirited defense of Diana's mental health, one gets the impression that this was an extremely unstable woman with whom no one could maintain a normal professional or personal relationship. It seems every anecdote involves avoiding her angry outbursts or assuaging her fragile ego.
This perspective on Diana's life was spellbinding, but I was even more fascinated by the insight into how the London police protect the royals. 'Protection officers' are expected to get close on a personal level to their protectees in order to gain their trust - an approach fraught with problems. Wharfe describes engaging in horseplay with Diana's sons, becoming essentially a surrogate father to them and a sort of platonic-husband figure to Diana. Although Wharfe sneers at the US Secret Service, the London police could do worse than to emulate their more emotionally detached approach to personal protection.

About the Author
Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing "Basic Technical Mathematics," At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the "Technical Mathematics" series. Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel,"" Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator," and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences,"" Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life," and "Business Statistics," He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzingmedical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics," Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master's degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program's mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program. Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the "Excel Manual" that accompanies "Elementary Statistics," 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola. In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the AmericanStroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

Practical and Easy to read.

I am using this text to teach statistics at a large public University level. This is my first time with this text, and although only half way through the book, I find it is very well written and interesting. I believe that anyone who can add subtract, multiple and divide can learn statistics from this book. The text introduces fundamental concepts at a level anyone can understand, and then leads the reader to progressively more complex but practical applications using mostly real data from biology and medicine. One of the great advantages of this text is the impressive number of problems for every section. As the problems become more complex, the reader is still asked question that reinforce the fundamentals and the take home message. A students solutions manual has the answers and solutions to the odd problems, which is also very useful. Although, not a major selling point for me, the print, binding, font, layout, etc are all excellent. I've given this book a critical eye, and thus far can find no major criticism and plenty to praise.
