In 1998 in Buenos Aires, five women began a series of conversations about their memories of torture in the ESMA, the School of Naval Mechanics, twenty years before.

In 1976 the Armed Forces seized control of Argentina and initiated the National Reorganization Process, which led to the quiet disappearance of 30,000 people, most taken from their homes at night by armed individuals in civilian dress. Between four thousand and forty-five hundred of those who passed through the Mechanics School died in torture or were thrown from an airplane into the sea. A few intellectual workers, like the authors, were spared.

But as Tina Rosenberg puts it in her foreword, "The women in this book inhabited a surreal hell in which they were never sure that the knock on the door at midnight meant they were to be taken to the torture table or out for a steak. There were torturers who fell in love with their prey. Munu Actis says, 'They'd come, they'd beat you to a pulp with a stick, and then at two in the morning they'd get you, put you in a car, and take you out to dinner. They'd sit you down at the same table, turn you into an equal: you ate the same food, they wanted to hear your opinions, and then back to Capucha [the wing where captives were kept hooded and shackled] you went. That would drive anybody crazy!'"

important testimony

I read this book a few years ago in Spanish after finding out about it through the Argentine periodical LUCHA ARMADA. I scoured the bookshops in Buenos Aires, only to find the book was completely unavailable in the country where the atrocities took place. Months later, my university found a copy in Spanish after much searching and many delays, but at least our campus has it now. Unfortunately, only those who can read Spanish have had access to the information held in this book. Until now....

I am delighted the memoir of these women who suffered at the ESMA will begin to reach a larger audience (through the English edition), but, until the paperback comes out, the price of the hardback will make the text only available through libraries.

I encourage everyone who is able to place an order through your library for this book to do so. It is important that we do not let these voices be buried by any more types of censorship. (Any form of limiting access to information--especially about political prisoners--is a type of censorship.)

For those of you who want to know more about these women, check the press coverage of one of the authors who recently had speaking engagements in New York and DC.

About the Author

Yossef Rapoport (PhD, Princeton) has been a Fellow in Arabic at the Oriental Institute, Oxford, and is currently a Lecturer in the Department of History at Queen Mary University of London. He has published on Islamic law, gender, cartography and the economic history of medieval Islam.

Shahab Ahmed (PhD, Princeton) is Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at Harvard University. He has also been Assistant Professor of Classical Arabic Literature at the American University in Cairo, Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows, Visiting Scholar in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, and Visiting Scholar at the Islamic Research Institute, Islamabad.

Ibn Tayamiyya, A victim of misinterpretation ?

“ For more attention, however, is typically accorded to extremist permutations of Ibn Taymiyya's thought in modern period, with the result that Ibn Taymiyya is invariably characterized as the evil progenitor of Islamic radicalization.” (P355, Mona Hassan, IT & his Times)

Most scholars agree that extremists misinterpreted IT thinking and used his writing out of historical context to justify their tactics to fight modern Muslim states. I finished reading the book and I discovered that he was a very complex thinker, born in a period of political instability after Baghdad was destroyed by Mongols.

Most of IT views on political and legal matters are preserved in the form of legal rulings (fatawas). In recent years, his rulings known as “Mongol fatawas” in response to inquiry about “permissibility of fighting the newly Islamized Mongols” who repeatedly invaded Syria-Palestine have become very popular and quoted by extremists.

The most of the activists of extremist groups who are using violence in order to impose Islamic order are educated in physical sciences (engineering, computer science, medicine) or seminarians (Taliban). Their knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence or history is not very deep. Ahmad Ibn-Taymmia (1263-1328), who lived under Mamluks of Egypt in Damascus. Although he was a man of pen, fought for the city of Damascus to protect against the onslaught of Mongols. In his time Mongols destroyed Abbasids. Iran was ruled by Ghazan Khan of Ilkhan (Mongol) dynasty. Although, they were converted to Sunni Islam, Ilkhans ruled by Yassa code rather than Sharia. Hence Ibn-Taymmia pronounced them heretics and declared that Muslims under Mongols were living in state of Jahiliyya. He declared jihad against Mongols.

Ibn-Taymmia was the follower of school founded by Imam Hanbal. According to him best role models were first three generations of Islam (Salaf). Any deviation from their practice is bid’ah. In his opinion, Muslims who are not following teachings of Salf, to be fought and killed. Despite his extreme political view regarding the government of his time, his positive role in jurisprudence is still admired. He criticized development of Islamic law after initial period which became rigid and imitation (Taqlidi). He promoted Ijtihad (to change) to change the laws to make them compatible with recent times.

IT was admired by the people of Damascus. He successfully inspired them to defend their city against Mongols. When he died, population attended his funeral procession in large numbers. IT remained obscure in non-Hambalis until recently. He became mainstream thinker of Sunni Islam in last century when Wahabi finally succeeded to establish a puritan state of Saudi Arabia.

Marvelous and carefully written book on a polemicized figure

This is a first-rate book, comprised of first-rate scholars. (It's unfortunate, in this regard, that the book was published by the Lahore branch of OUP; I've found my hardcover version of the book falling apart, and I would also think the Lahore brand could decrease from the deserving prestige of the publication.) The authors give meticulous attention their project, and the bibliography is priceless.

This volume is a must-read for anyone working on Ibn Taymiyya in an academic sense, but it should also interest journalists and anyone else who finds themselves thinking about the medieval scholar and his context. Fortunately, this text contributes to an ongoing and increasing trend to locate Ibn Taymiyya as a complex and multifaceted thinker, rather than as a simplistic champion of this or that ideology. Hoover's website on Ibn Taymiyya and Bazzano's forthcoming Religion Compass articles should provide useful complements for the content of chapters in Ibn Taymiyya and His Times, as well as its bibliography. Also Kokoschka and Krawietz' edited volume on Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya.

Given Michot's extensive work on Ibn Taymiyya, I lament that he didn't receive a spot in the volume; this isn't a criticism so much as an observation.

All in all, two thumbs up for this book.

This title is under the name of its editor, but I'd like to underline the Author's name: ALEKSEI FEDOROVICH FILIPPOV. His book is about differential equations with discontinuous righthand sides; a subject that you will not find in regular text books on differential equations. Filippov starts the discution stablishing a new concept of what a solution is in the context of discontinuities and states the main theorems on existence and uniqueness of these solutions. This book requires from the reader a deep mathematical background. Topics such as nonlinear systems, bifurcation theory and differential inclusions are addressed. Despite the fact that this is a math book, it is a highly recomended fundamental reading for every control engineer interested in nonlinear systems, especially in sliding mode control. The only bad thing about this book is that almost all bibliographical references are in Russian.

A story of love and bravery

I had to search to find this book. It is out of print.
But when our son raised a Guide Dog puppy (a female shepherd, just like Buddy) for Guide Dogs of America as a homeschool project he wanted to learn all he could about these special dogs.

Buddy was a dog guide to Morris Frank, one of the founders of the Seeing Eye. The first dog guide school in the United States.

This novel tells the amazing story about how young man and dog met. And the journey they braved together to teach the people of this country about the amazing independence these special dogs offer.

My son loved it and learned more than just the history of the Seeing Eye dogs. He learned about determination, bravery, loyalty, and love.

Just read the book. It is that special.

A piece of working dog history

This book was written by Morris Frank about Buddy, the first American seeing eye dog. Buddy made it possible for disabled people everywhere to have access rights granted to them so no public place can legally refuse an assistance dog. Morris Frank's desire to be free and the lengths he went to achieve this freedom not just for himself, but all other people who refused to be helpless.

Having lived with, and loved, German Shepherd Dogs for the past thirty years, it would be impossible for me not to see the intelligence and beauty of the breed in this book. Read it. And then, the next time you see someone with their guide dog, think about Buddy and the legacy of love and service she left behind.

Roger Zelazny (1937-1995) was a wizard of the pen: he won six Hugos and three Nebulas and is revered by science fiction and fantasy readers. Lord Demon is his last novel, the second of two projects unfinished at his death. Jane Lindskold, his partner and a fantasy author herself, completed it from some manuscript, a few notes, and conversations she'd had with him. Fans are often skeptical of posthumous collaborations: "It's not real Zelazny"--but Lord Demon comes darned close. It deserves space beside the Amber series, The Dream Master, and Lord of Light. Zelazny left two novel manuscripts unfinished when he died in 1995. One was Donnerjack, which Lindskold (Brother to Dragons, etc.) completed for 1998 publication. This is the second. Zelazny is best known for characters who, in between waging interdimensional battles and building planets, still have time to be very human. Lord Demon, also called Kai Wren, and sometimes Godslayer, follows that familiar model. Once the greatest of his kind, Kai, along with the other demons, was banished from their homeland 5000 years ago by the gods. The demons found a way to Earth, specifically China, where they rebuilt their lives. For the last few millennia, Kai has withdrawn from demon society, focused on constructing splendid magical bottles infused with his chi. Now his human servant and best friend has been murdered. Assuming the crime is merely one born of an old grudge, Kai doesn't take it too seriously. That is, until he's betrayed and stripped of his ability to manipulate chi energyAreducing him to the merely human in a new war among demonkind. Fighting back means dangerous alliances and sticking his neck out as he hasn't done for thousands of years. Most dangerous of all, however, is the possibility that Kai is just a pawn in a plot that passed him by years ago. Though the novel is slow to get moving, once the fight is on, it doesn't let up. The narrative weaves a fine line between tragedy and humor, sometimes slapstick, as Kai gathers a ragtag band of Chinese sorcerers and shape changers and Pekinese dogs. Lindskold effectively captures the voices of Zelazny's wise-cracking characters and continues the expert blending of magical and mundane that makes his work so enjoyable. This novel is fine Zelazny, and a fine tribute. (Aug.)

Final treasure from the Lord of Light

I was a bit surprised to read some of the scathing comments that other reviewers have posted about "Lord Demon," and from the general trend of these reviews I suppose myself to be among the minority of Zelazny fans who thoroughly enjoyed this book. So be it. "Lord Demon" was fresh and original Zelazny fiction, full of warmth and wit and all of the other goodness that readers have come to expect from this master of letters. Zelazny was never an author to churn out endless carbon-copy reworks of the same tired themes, and once again he succeeded in breaking out of his own mold when he wrote this book. In fact, I suspect that many of the negative reviews about "Lord Demon" are rooted in the fact that this novel, like so much of Zelazny's fiction, is completely different from anything else that he's ever written. This book is not "Nine Princes In Amber," which is appropriate enough since Zelazny already has a book by that name!

Kai Wren is something of a self-imposed exile among demon-kind, concentrating most of his time and energy on the creation of fabulous (and potently magical) art glass. When a beloved human servitor is murdered by lowly "scrub" demons, however, Lord Demon's thirst for vengeance draws the lonely recluse back into demonic society and politics.

Yes, the reader sees much of what is coming long before Kai Wren catches on. Big deal. The story is told primarily from Kai Wren's perspective-- that is, from the perspective of an ancient and powerful being, confident in his own immortality and therefore blinded by arrogance-- so it shouldn't be too surprising that the reader often sees things that Lord Demon is incapable of comprehending, for all of his terrible power and ancient wisdom. The author's POINT is that Kai Wren is maddeningly overconfident and frequently underestimates his foes. Of course Kai Wren is oblivious to things that would come instinctively to lesser beings! When you, the reader, see Kai Wren walking blindly into danger, it adds depth to his character and heightens the novel's suspense. In fact, professional writers even have a name for this type of literary device: "foreshadowing."

I also see many reviews complaining about the "planes of hangers and socks." Ridiculous, yes, but also vintage Zelazny humor! I have a feeling that these reviewers haven't read much other Zelazny fiction, for his sense of humor always tended to run toward the absurd-- one of my favorite Zelazny short stories, "Unicorn Variations," is about beer-swilling, chess-playing mythical beings, and who could forget the 'Alice in Wonderland' bar scene from Zelazny's 'Amber' series? Personally, I thought The Walker's one-line explanation of the hangars and socks was hilarious, and a single quote from a novel hasn't made me laugh out loud like this in a long, long time!

Is "Lord Demon" Zelazny's best novel? Probably not. But Roger Zelazny's genius was such that even his second-tier efforts tower above most other fantasy and sci fi yarns! With "Lord Demon," Roger Zelazny delivered exactly what his fans have come to expect: a well-told tale about extremely human characters, told with wit and warmth, and offering a touching lesson or two along the way. You may even see a reflection of your own mortality in the dark eyes of Kai Wren-- Lord Demon.

A Last, Lingering Taste of Roger Zelany

"Lord Demon" is, I understand, the final posthumous book of the great Roger Zelazny, completed by his friend and companion Jane Lindskold. It is a novel which fits well within the classic Zelazny mold, set in a world of the quasi-rationalized supernatural. This time the mythological background is Chinese, but I think if you did a DNA analysis of "Lord Demon" you would find strains of "Lord of Light" and probably "Jack of Shadows" in its ancestry. I would not select it as among the very best of his works -- Zelazny's best are dazzling -- but "Lord Demon" is fun to read and the usual Zelazny themes are dancing around. If you're a Zelazny fan, I think you will like it. And if you have never read him before ... well, it's not a bad introduction at all.

Kite, With Broken String

Zelazny was one of the field's premier science fiction and fantasy writers from the mid-sixties to the nineties, giving us some truly unique visions and always told in his own voice, a voice colored around the edges by cynicism and a touch of humor, but mainly couched in a sense of legend and archetype. This book begins in very typical Zelazny fashion, introducing us to the world of literal demons, mainly drawn from Chinese legends. And the introduction will grab you; its setting and concept are very well drawn and captivating.
The story is told from the point of view of Kai Wren, also known as Lord Demon and the Godslayer, so named as the only demon to ever defeat a god in their long running war. But as we meet him, we find an artisan and something of a hermit, who has spent the last 120 years designing and fashioning a magical bottle, who has feelings for his human servant (something demons aren't supposed to have). When his servant is murdered by some scrub demons during a routine run to Earth for pizza, Kai is galvanized to action, first to obtain revenge on the perpetrators, and later, as just who the real brains behind the murder becomes more and more of a puzzle, he finds himself working as an investigator, slowly developing friendships with other humans and demons as he gathers information.
If the starting scenario had been consistently carried through the entire book, this might have been a very good novel. Unfortunately, after about page 70 or so, it deteriorates into very ordinary developments, as the demons are more and more portrayed as having very human qualities and vices and several rather pointless additions are made to the initial idea. The old idea of alternate universes accessed by 'gates' becomes one of the main plot movers (even if a couple of these universes are populated by hangers and socks its still not very original), most of the 'gods' are only sketchily drawn and seem remarkably weak to be gods, and most of the 'puzzle' the average reader will figure out long before Kai Wren does. The final battle is certainly not Zelazny in his prime, as it is a complete cop-out, a retreat to 'this is fantasy, anything goes', and will severely disappoint the reader.
I don't know whether the above problems are those of Zelazny not having time before his death to completely flesh out his story idea and correct perceived problems or are those of having the novel completed by Jane Lindskold with her own ideas that don't mesh very well with Zelazny's original concept. But the net result, while still very readable and good for some mild entertainment, does not compare to the marvelous tales an earlier Zelazny gave us, from Lord of Light and This Immortal to Jack of Shadows.

Benjamin Keen (PhD, Yale University) was professor Emeritus from Northern Illinois University. He was a leading scholar in the field of Latin American history, particularly the colonial period in Mexico. Although retired from active teaching for some years, Keen continued to research, write, and lecture until his death in late 2002.

Keith Haynes (PhD 1981 Northern Illinois University) is Professor of History at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he has taught Latin American and U.S. diplomatic history for more than 20 years.

I hated this book. It was a bit repetative, and i found it boring. I am not a history buff though, so I'll give it 3 stars because i'm probably going to far (i kind of want to give it 1)
