The work largely replaces the Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics, edited by James Hastings (Edinburgh, 1908-1926; New York, 1955. reprint), an important reference series that has become outdated both in its conception of religion as chiefly theoretical (rather than also sociological and practical) and its Western bias, and by the progress of religious research (including hermeneutical and methodological approaches) and discovery (e.g., Dead Sea Scrolls, Nag Hammadi library, and research in folk religion and in gnostic and esoteric traditions). While there are several one-volume encyclopedias and dictionaries of religion in general, as well as multivolume encyclopedias of single religions, nothing compares in scope and currency to the present work. The entries are clearly written, with attention to scholarly detail; alphabetized, but with sub-topical organization (e.g.,"Rites of Passage" has five adjacent articles providing an overview, several definitions, and separate articles on Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim rites); and accompanied by end-of-entry bibliographies. The work especially deserves commendation for its internationalism of topics, contributors, and points of view; its attention to primitive religions throughout the world; its treatment of alchemy, the occult, mysticism, and popular traditions; and its conception of religion as a vital part of human culture (including articles on atheism and Marxism). Religious information is used to illuminate human experience and the meaning of being humana use that implies, for many of the contributors, a belief in the unity of core experience beneath its diverse manifestations. Its coverage of the so-called great religions is comprehensive and balanced but avoids presenting them (or anything else) as normative. As editor Joseph M. Kitagawa says, the aim was "to produce not a dictionary but a genuine encyclopedia that would introduce educated, nonspecialist readers to important ideas, practices, and persons in the religious experience of humankind from the Paleolithic past to our day." In this aim the editors have succeeded admirably. Nonspecialist readers of all types will find here a wealth of information on religion and its interaction with other aspects of human culture. you can smell the scholarship

This set edited by Eliade is the definative encyclopedia on religion. Every aspect is covered from Taoism to cannabalism. There are very few subjects that cannot be researched, from moon worship to major current religions and their historical precedents.
I am excited to own it, and I got a great price!

A good Place to start but do not stop here.

Now over ten years in print this major account of the world's religions is the best resource for authoritative information on the world's major religious traditions. Still the work remains especially uneven in the quality of articles. Eliade died soon after the work was in production and there was not as strong or even editorial control over the quality and depth of information presented. Some scholars did excellent contributions, others are rather slap-dash and the selection of article length and topics selected seem somewhat bewildering and idiosyncratic. The work did show something of the creative ferment in religious studies but it tended to avoid controversy or provide a systematic view of history or of religions. But even with these qualifications it is the only current Encyclopedia of religion though it is hoped that some of the Internet projects now in creation will eventually make up for its generally uneven executions. Good reading.

This will make you a better Java programmer, period.

"Effective Java" transformed my Java code. It made me a better programmer. If I were teaching a Java class, I would make this book a companion to the main text. I thought I knew Java pretty well and was following good basic practices, but almost every section in this book made me slap my forehead and run back to the code I was writing to refactor it. OK, maybe you don't want to/can't go and refactor all your existing code, but you will definitely write your code differently after reading this book, unless you are one of those rare superstar programmers and Java gurus who has nothing more to learn.

This is the best Java book I have ever read. It is focused, concise, and relevant, and it does exactly one thing: teaches you how to write better Java code. It is not a tutorial on how to build Java applications or a guide to learning Java. You must already know Java to use this book. It's also not a reader on general programming; while it does emphasize good programming practices that you can and should use in any language, the 57 items in this book are specifically about Java and how to use the Java language most effectively.

The items range from very basic practices that anyone writing a single line of Java code should follow to some more advanced topics that not everyone will make use of immediately (notably the chapters on threads and serialization), but NOTHING here is fluff or esoteric. You should know this stuff. Learn it, live it, love it. Did I mention it should be required reading for any Java programmer? If I were hiring a Java programmer, having read this book would be a BIG plus for any candidate I was considering... I think this book is to Java what "Code Complete" is to general programming. Seriously.

The only slightly negative comment I have, not really a negative but just something to be aware of, is that this book (at least the latest version) only covers JDK 1.4, so some of the advice should be modified just a little for the latest release, 1.5. (Notably, the section on writing typesafe enum classes -- the Enum class is now part of the Java language so you no longer need to "roll your own," but the tip still applies, as well as its suggestions on how to extend an enum class.)

This is what you need to know to become a Java guru!

This book contains a generous cross-section of the knowledge that differentiates Java gurus from advanced Java programmers.
I've been working full-time in Java since 1995, prior to version 1.0. I've also written books and articles on Java and have been teaching Java at the University level as a sideline for four years. In that time I've accumulated a great deal of "expert" knowledge about the language, the JVM, and the APIs and developed opinions on the best approaches to use in Java. At this point, reading books such as this that contain a collection of tips and advice I am usually satisfied to gain one new piece of knowledge; I learned at least six new things from this book.
Of the 50+ books on Java I've read, this book contains by far the most comprehensive and useful collection of that hard-won knowledge of core Java. The bonus is the clear and concise manner in which it is presented.
Bloch is dead-on. There isn't a single factual error or piece of bad advice in the book. The most I came up with were a couple of omissions on some of the topics. However, omissions are inevitable given the technical depth of some of the topics Bloch covers, such as serialization, exceptions and threads.
I offer only two caveats about the book. The first is that the book is for advanced Java programmers. This is not to say that this information is not useful to every Java programmer, but you need to have a comprehensive knowledge of Java in order to appreciate many of the topics. This book does not provide comprehensive coverage, but rather fills in the detail and subtleties. I teach a Java IV class and recommend this to my students as additional reading after completing the class.
The other caveat is that this book is written from the perspective of writing public APIs. Bloch is the lead architect for the core JDK APIs where the classes and APIs have special security considerations. Several pieces of advice he gives apply absolutely to a public API where you want to defend the API from malicious code. However, if the code you are creating is intended for a less hostile and more trusting environment, fully following all of his advice will result in unnecessarily complex code. The one knock I give to the book is that Bloch does not delineate the circumstances that would dictate following his rather rigorous approach to bullet-proofing an API and can leave the reader with the mistaken perception that the advice applies equally to all categories of code.
Overall, this is absolutely a must-have book for the experienced Java programmer. Even if you are not yet an advanced Java programmer, buy this book and keep revisiting it as you advance until everything in the book makes sense to you.

The bible of clowning

As a performer and theater history enthusiast, I've read most of the books on clowns out there. This is far and away the best: a marvelous work of research, delightfully written. Why is it so hard to find?

One of the very few great books on the History of Clowning

John Towsen's "Clowns" is a classic, and perhaps the best book ever written on clowns and their history in the English language. (There is another one, "Clowns and Pantomimes" by Maurice Willson Disher, but it was first published in... 1925!) Mr. Towsen's study is very well and deeply researched, and encompasses the history of clowning around the world, mostly in Europe and of course in America.

There are only four books on the history of clowning that are, in my opinion, worth reading: the aforementioned "Clowns and Pantomimes", Tristan Rémy's "Les Clowns" (1945), both of which were included in Mr. Towsen's research, André Sallée and Collective's "Clown et Farceurs" (1979), and John Towsen's "Clowns". Two are in English, two are in French. The rest either target a very limited field, or are just compilations of clichés and anecdotes more or less rooted in reality.

Clowning, which is a theatrical form that eventually found its way in the circus, but remains a stage form as well, is a style of comedy that is by and large very little known and understood today, and is much too often limited to the perception of a cartoonish image of an outrageously made-up individual doing pratfalls in the ring.

Yet, Joe Grimaldi in England, Dan Rice and George L. Fox in the U.S., for example, were stars of the first magnitude in the nineteenth century -- and neither Grimaldi nor Fox ever set foot in a circus ring. In the early part of the twentieth century, one could fill a circus or a theater with the names of Grock or the Fratellinis. And of course, one could fill movie houses with the names of Charles Chaplin, Buster Keaton, or Harry Langdon, who were indeed clowns in their own right.

So there is much to learn in John Towsen's intelligent and widely researched study about an art form that is still very much alive (see for instance the hit Broadway show "Full Moon" with two star clowns, Bill Irwin and David Shiner, in the 1990s). At a time when clowning, and especially stage clowning, experiences a renaissance, Mr. Towsen'd book is a must-read for aspiring clowns, theater historians and journalists, and for anyone with a curious mind.

Hard- To- Find Book Found

After a diligent search in many directions, I finally found this out-of -print book at Amazon and at a reasonably price too.

Dad would be proud.

I'm Jeff Wittmann, one of 5 sons of Wendell Wittmann, the bombadier of Harold "Robbie" Robinson's B-24 bomber crew. I've had this book for years, but only recently sat down and read it cover to cover. Robbie actually personally gave it to my mother after my dad was killed in a car crash. How's that for irony? Surviving 30 missions over Nazi Germany only to be killed by an idiot who can't drive. But I digress... My father never talked much about his time in the war other than vague references. I would always take that to mean that it was no big deal. In my mind, he would fly over to Germany every few days, drop a few bombs, be back in England in time for afternoon tea and crumpets. After reading this book with its extremely intense decriptions of the harrowing experiences of the 445th Bomb Group in the skies over France and Germany, I realize it's nothing short of a miracle that I'm even walking the earth today.

This almost daily and highly detailed account of the crew of the B-24 named Bullet Serenade kept me up past midnight several nights. It's a WWII story but it's also very much a love story of a young man and his new bride separated by a terrible and bloddy war. Robbie's undying love and devotion to her are an inspiration as it keeps him going through his 30 missions. My parents were in an identical situation during that time so Robbie's story is very much that of my father's.

The tales told of others in the 445th are very entertaining as well. Jimmy Stewart (yes that Jimmy Stewart) the squadron was a great guy who was not content to send his guys out on missions while he stayed behind safe at the base. Jimmy went along on some of the most dangerous runs leading his men into battle, much to the chagrin of Air Force Brass. What a loss that would have been if he were shot down and worse captured and used by the Nazi propaganda machine. And there's Dabbs the tail gunner, who's sexual exploits through WWII England warrant a book all by themselves. Dad never mentioned Dabbs.....

"A Reason to Live"

This is a book that shows the sacrifices that were made by the WWII generation to protect the freedoms we share as Americans today. Mr. Robinson gives a unique perspective to the bombing raids over Europe and the great lose of American life. There are numerous books on the market discussing the decision making from the pilot or wing commander's point of view. This perspective comes from an enlisted man, a true "citizen soldier" that was asked by his friends and neighbors to defend the American way of life.

Many times throughout this book, I felt that I was in the plane beside Mr. Robinson and the other crew members as they flew dangerous mission over France and Germany. The vivid recollections and attention to detail makes this a great read for those that enjoy and thrive on WWII history. The writing style and explanation makes this a great read for those all from the WWII historians to the average reader. The personal story of a newly married young man that has to leave his wife and fight in one of the most dangerous spots in WWII will make you want to cry, laugh, leave you on the edge or your seat and never want to put the book down.

This book also offers a special bonus. It gives you a glimpse of the war time service of actor Jimmy Stewart. Stewart had such a private attitude about his war time service that not much was written (or known) about this time in his life. Mr. Robinson shares many Stewart stories that could only be told properly by someone there. This is a book that will hold a special place on my bookshelf.
