If I was being pedantic, I'd take issue with that last bit - are there really any "trade secrets" left to acrylic painting? I know, a list of three things looks better and the alliteration is irresistible. And anyway, you do get 300 very good ideas, some of which you'll know, many of which may be new. This is one of those portmanteau books that throws a lot of stuff into an overnight bag and heads for a thoroughly good weekend away. It packs for all weathers and occasions and is as happy tramping the hills in a rainstorm as it is rocking it up in a ballgown at a five star hotel in the evening. It might even shove in a little je ne sais quoi in case it gets lucky. Some of the ideas are simple: Make a mahl-stick; some more adventurous: Using tone in context - for instance (I've given up on the travel metaphor now, let's not milk it). It's one of those books to have on the shelf and pull down when you just want something not too demanding to browse. Maybe you don't want to make a mahl-stick, maybe you've got glazing off to a T, but there's loads to ingest and enjoy, nothing's too long (some tips come four to a page) and there are bags of illustrations. You might find something new, you might get some ideas or you might simply find your creative juices refreshed. ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES

This is a very good book on acrylic painting techniques with lots of instruction, tips and trade secrets about using acrylic paints.

Starting with the basics, the book explains how to begin setting up and the good reasons for using acrylic paints. He discusses color, brushes, brush techniques, painting knives, sponges and shapers. He shows how to stretch and mount a canvas and how to set up a studio.

In chapter two, the author shows how to design a painting; how to create a good composition, pick good subjects and he explains color theory.

In chapter three, the author, explores techniques. He discusses acrylics, water colors, action painting, gouache, classic and modern oils, monoprinting and more. All of the illustrations are in full color. The paper is heavy stock glossy.

There are many examples of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and animal studies. Each painting is shown in several stages of completion with tips on how to get it right. This is an exceptional book aimed at the beginner or slightly advanced artist that will make you a better painter in the acrylic medium.

A go-to acrylic technique book worth keeping open when painting.

While browsing online through some art collections and current exhibits in London museums and public galleries, I clicked on "Store" in each site just to see what was available - I was mostly interested in books on collections and exhibits that included discussions of the artists' techniques and materials. For one of the large public galleries, this was the only acrylic techniques book listed for that store. So, I dropped in here to Amazon and read all the reviews. Then, I went elsewhere on the www and read more reviews. Then, I came back to Amazon and bought it. Over the last few months, I have consulted it as often, if not more often, than the other handful (i.e., less than six) technique books I keep handy while painting.

If you are like me and don't want to take the time to experiment to achieve a particular effect when painting (or also like me don't have a long attention span so don't always remember what I'm doing), this book should be added to your reference library.

About the Author

Tupper Cawsey is Professor Emeritus of Business, Wilfrid Laurier University. He is presently Editor, Case Research Journal, for the North American Case Research Association. He has served on several boards of directors and was Chair, Lutherwood Board from 2003 - 2008. Tupper was recognized nationally in 2001 as one of Canada’s top five business professors by receiving the Leaders in Management Education award, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Post. He is also the 1994 recipient of the David Bradford Educator Award, presented by the Organizational Behaviour Teaching Society, and the 1990 Wilfrid Laurier University "Outstanding Teacher Award".

Tupper created the Case Track for the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, a peer review process for cases. He is author or coauthor of over 6 books and monographs including, Toolkit for Organizational Change – 1st Edition, Canadian Cases in Human Resource Management, Cases in Organizational Behaviour and several monographs including Control Systems in Excellent Canadian Companies and the Career Management Guide. Tupper has over 50 refereed journal and conference publications. In 2005, he received the Christiansen Award from the Kaufman Foundation and the North American Case Research Association and in 2007.his case, “Board Games at Lutherwood” won the Directors College Corporate Governance Award and the Bronze Case Award at the NACRA Conference. In 2009, his case, “NuComm International” won the Gold Case Award at the NACRA Conference.

Gene Deszca is Professor of Business Administration, a former MBA Director, and is currently the Associate MBA Director in the School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. He has held a number of leadership roles at Laurier, including ones involving the development and launch of the full-time, one year MBA program, the executive MBA program, and the international concentration. He was instrumental in the development of the Society of Management Accountants of Canada's post-university professional accreditation programs and is a member of their national Board of Directors.

Gene is the author or coauthor over 100 journal, conference publications/presentations, books, monographs, and technical papers. These include the books Canadian Cases in Human Resource Management, and Cases in Organizational Behaviour and the articles Driving Loyalty Through Time-to-Value, and Managing the New Product Development Process: Best-in-Class Principles and Leading Practices. His current research and consulting activity focuses on organizational change and the development of high performance enterprises.

Cynthia Ingols is an Associate Professor, School of Management (SOM), Simmons College, Boston. At the SOM, she directs the internship program for undergraduate and MBA students, and teaches courses in Organizational Change and Career Strategies to MBA students. Ingols leads Strategic Leadership for Women, an executive education program with a global reach that strengths the leadership skills and self-confidence of its participants. Early in her career, she received her doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Organization Behavior and taught Management Communication at the Harvard Business School.

Cynthia focuses her consulting work in three areas: conducting diagnostic work to promote change in organizations; developing interactive executive education programs, particularly using cases and simulations; and, coaching executives to enhance their leadership capacity and careers. Ingols’ research and publications follow similar lines. Her research on executive education programs has been published in leading journals, such as Harvard Business Review, Organizational Dynamics, and Training. Her research work on creating innovative organizational structures and change was published in the Design Management Journal. She has published numerous articles about careers in journals such as the Journal of Career Development and Human Resource Development Quarterly. She co-authored two books on career management: Take Charge of Your Career (2005), and A Smart, Easy Guide to Interviewing (2003).

About the Author

Dr. David Tolin is Director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living and Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Randy O. Frost is Harold & Elsa Siipola Israel Professor of Psychology at Smith College.

Dr. Gail Steketee is Dean and Professor at Boston University School of Social Work.

Drs. Tolin, Frost, and Steketee are among the world's leading experts in the study and treatment of hoarding disorder. Together, they have held three grants to study hoarding from the National Institute of Mental Health and have led the field in our understanding of why hoarding behavior occurs, how hoarding is reflected in brain activity, and how best to treat people with hoarding. They have developed and tested a treatment for hoarding, currently considered the "gold standard" in the field, which forms the basis of this book.

Excellent but if you have this problem buy the paper version

This book represents state of the art information on how to approach hoarding. It is directed at a self-help audience but can also be used with a support group. I am a psychologist and work with people who have the problem and it was useful to read but the Kindle version is not ideal for the person trying to use it themselves. The book has a number of places where you need to answer some questions. They do not show up well in the Kindle version and of course there is no way to record your answer in the book.

It based on the latest research-based information. I already have gained a lot of insights and practical stratigies I'm putting to use. I can' t wait to get my "house in order" (physically and emotionally). With theis book, workbook and counseling, I am super optimistic!

Your new motorcycle came with an owner's manual. Why in the world would you need a more general one?
If you are like me, you do not really know very much about motorcycles other than how to ride one. The manufacturer's owner's manual assumes more knowledge than you really have, and encourages you to get professional maintenance for all but the most routine matters. But if you love your motorcycle (and who doesn't?), you want to take good care of it.
Here's where Mr. Wilson's guide is valuable. It simply explains keeping your motorcyle clean and safe. It also provides good background on how motorcycles are designed and the parts work. Even if you never plan to do any repairs, you will find this interesting. The photographs are very clear and detailed, and allow you to see what he is talking about.
My only complaint about the book is that some of the explanations assume a level of knowledge above what I have. "If you can rewire a plug, you can work on your bike." Well, I still don't know what "rewiring" a plug is, even after reading the book. My guess is that he is referring to adjusting the gap for the spark, but I'm not sure.
I did come away with a sense of what needs to be done with motorcycles. I recently read a similar book by the same publisher on bicycle maintenance. I found that there are more differences than similarities between bicycle and motorcycle maintenance. Also, because you will be riding your motorcycle at higher speeds than a bicycle, I came away thinking that professional maintenance is not such a bad idea.
The economic benefit from this book will come mostly from helping you be more aware of the importance of preventive maintenance (so you are more likely to do it) and spotting repair needs before they become more expensive. But I doubt if all but the most ardent do-your-own-repair people can hope to recover their money by owning this guide right away. Rather, the return will mostly come from improved knowledge and the comfort you have in knowing that your motorcycle is safer because of your enhanced awareness.
How much conscious competence is valuable to you? You probably don't know much about electricity, but you can turn on the lights. I suspect that you can improve your enjoyment of life if you learn more about how things work that you love . . . and use all the time. A good place to start is to seek out books like this one that explain and photographically illustrate the basics in simple ways.

Great -- both clearly written and informative

This is a well written book for those wanting to know how a motorcycle actually works. The author states that " this guide should be used in conjunction with an owner's manual" and he is absolutely correct. Basic maintenance is well documented and the photographs are fantastic. A worthy addition to any motorcyclist's library.

Useful book for beginners learning to maintain their bikes

Hugo Wilson has put together the essentials for learning to maintain a UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle;) though many of his techniques apply to many or even most bikes, his examples are all Japanese models, such as Yamaha, Honda & Suzuki.
This small book has many attractive, full-color photos, showing exactly the bits in question, and the tools used to fix them. There are also areas which explain the basics of how items like spring/damper suspension units work, which many people new to the inner workings of motorcycles will surely find interesting.
Wilson's text is easy-to-follow, and informative. The book may contain some information that well-acquainted riders don't know, but is, I believe, most useful for those who are relatively new to maintaining their bikes.
