Rosabeth Moss Kanter will convince you that the goal of winning is not losing two times in a row. In her view, success and failure are not events, they are self-fulfilling tendencies. Drawing on more than 300 interviews with leaders in business, sports and politics, Kanter cogently explains the role confidence plays in the performance of institutions and individuals. Losing streaks are often created and then perpetuated when people lose confidence in their leaders and systems, while winning streaks are fueled by confident people who are secure in their own abilities and the ability of their leaders. Winning streaks are characterized by continuity and continued investment, Kanter argues, while losing streaks are marked by disruption and a lack of investment that typically give way to a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. Combining theory with practical advice, Kanter details how losing organizations can instill accountability, collaboration and initiative—Kanter's three pillars of confidence—to help start a turnaround. She illustrates her ideas with a number of real-world examples, among them how the new owner of the Philadelphia Eagles stopped the team's chronic losing ways and built a winning organization. Professional gamblers are very aware of the power of winning streaks and losing streaks-- and that elusive attribute that differentiates the two: confidence. Individuals, sports teams, companies, and entire nations create moods so contagious they create self-fulfilling patterns that can persist for decades. When Kanter spoke to leaders of streak-prone organizations, it was consistently the winners that wanted to share their experiences. (It seems no one wants to be slapped with the "loser" label.) But the Chicago Cubs consistently came up as the example of the organization with the most infamous losing streak, and although the players deny that the brand influences them, the constant reminder from media and fans keeps the jinx alive. She also looks at the factors necessary to create a turnaround, where strong leadership is essential, as recently exemplified at Gillette and the Philadelphia Eagles. It's been said that "confidence builds nations" and although this is primarily an examination of self-reinforcing cycles, Kanter shows how we as individuals and groups ultimately have a measure of control over our responses to circumstance. "patience" --needed to read this book from begin to end

I had great expectations of this book as it started out OK. But soon (within a couple chapters) I realized that the author had run out of new things to say. While there are some non-fiction authors that can captivate and entertain an audience with a single concept (ie... Gladwell w/"Tipping Point/Blink"), this author's writing style seems unusually laborious and repetitive -- languishing in incomprehensible detail. Sad to say, but I think I would have been better off just reading a synopsis of this book.

This book is boring, tedious, and thoroughly uninspiring

I can't believe the average customer review is greater than 4 stars! This book was a chore to read; I will admit that I could not drag myself throught he entire text. And I mean "text". This book was written like a textbook. I felt I back in college slogging through my required reading. This book was written as if someone did a whole bunch of research (using many different grad students of course), then tried to compile all the data into a book. The problem is, anybody can do that, but few can do that well. The writer loses the reader in all those details, forgeting to stick to the basics, highlight them with interesting examples, and repeat them often. I know she probably thinks she did this, and she did, just not well. I've never seen such an interesting topic made so boring.

About the Author
James A. Hall is a Professor of Accounting, Co-Director of the Computer Science and Business program, and the Peter E. Bennett Chair in Business and Economics at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, he entered the University of Tulsa in 1970 and received a BSBA in 1974 and an MBA in 1976. He earned his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University in 1979. Hall has worked in the field of systems analysis and computer auditing, and has served as consultant in these areas to numerous organizations. Dr. Hall has published articles in the JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING, AUDITING & FINANCE, JOURNAL OF MIS, COMMUNICATIONS OF THE ACM, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING, JOURNAL OF COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS, THE JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION, THE REVIEW OF ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS, and other professional journals. He is also the author of ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS, 9E, published by South-Western College Publishing. His research interests include internal controls, computer fraud, and IT outsourcing.

Tommie Singleton is the Marshall IS Scholar and assistant professor of information systems at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy, he completed his BS in Accounting in 1977, and an MBA in 1979, both at the University of North Alabama. Professor Singleton received his doctorate from the University of Mississippi in 1995, after spending 11 years as president of a small software company. His career is a mix of accounting and information systems (IS) and includes consulting and providing continuing education to professionals regarding auditing and IS. He earned certifications as CPA, CMA, CISA, and CITP. In 1999, the Alabama Society of CPAs awarded him the ¿Innovative User of Technology Award¿ for 1998-1999. Professor Singleton has published articles in the Information Systems Control Journal, EDPACS, Journal of Cooperative Accounting, Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance, Managerial Auditing Journal, and others. He also coauthored the third edition of Managing the Audit Function with Michael Cangemi, released in 2003.

A classic, but dated

This book is a classic, but it's from another era.

On the plus side, it was one of the first books to recognize that programmer-hours are not interchangeable, that some programmers perform as much as 10 times faster than others. It gives a lot of attention to the ways a corporation can accommodate this variation, and still deliver complex projects on time.

On the other hand, the book views software as monolithic: a great edifice that must be designed up front and then built from those specifications. In today's world, we have come to realize that software is a living thing, it constantly morphs as time progresses. The "Agile" software movement is focused on the idea of providing software that does something useful very early, then building upon it bit by bit.

The Marx Brothers made some classic movies in their day, but nobody makes movies like that any more. I'd say this book falls into the same category, even the anniversary edition.

Interesting case study

The first half of the book is a case study of the development of OS/360 in the 1970s: what the problems were, what was tried, what worked and what didn't. While I (and probably many others) snicker at the state of technology then compared to what it is now, I feel that the lessons Brooks learned (and happily relays to the reader) are still relevant and valuable. You certainly will have to abstract the methodology to the current technology we have today, but managerial lessons, as I said, are still relevant, mostly because people haven't changed that much. Basically, adding more people to already-late projects makes things worse. All of the communication and documentation that goes along with large projects are 100% necessary, and the documentation should be about 90% complete before coding starts. I think a wiki would solve both of these issues in one shot, but that's me. The last half of the book is mostly an inner dialogue by Brooks about what he thinks of the lessons he preached, what other people in the industry have said about his book, and his responses to it.

I think this is a definite must-read for anyone that programs on large software projects or manages large software projects. Brooks comes right out and says at the beginning that other engineering disciplines already know about all of the project management overhead, which I agree with, because I am in one of those other disciplines. Apparently the programming people don't see it necessary to teach project management as part of a bachelor's degree program, which might explain a lot of the larger programs in the past few decades. I have to admit though, the entire computer industry, both hardware and software, has been through a tumultuous and extraordinarily rapid history. Other disciplines have a much longer history book from which to reflect and design better processes, management or otherwise.

Finally, the prose is dry sometimes awkward, which I suppose is typical of the professor types with delusions of eloquence. Despite that, I thought it was overall an easy read, though not as humorous and engaging as some of the other software books I've been through.

Managment of computer projects

The art of computer programming appears to have aspects that are not seen in any other known discipline. Large programs are more complex than small ones. A program twice as large as another is more than twice as complex. So, the management of program development is different than the management of anything else. This is the definitive book on the subject. Is everything in the book absolutely correct in every situation? No, but it's very widely applicable, and better than any other reference available. Is this book the last word on the subject? Probably not. But it has already stood the test of time, despite plenty of serious attempts to displace it over decades. And in most industry, even this book's most basic lessons have yet to be learned. In this volume lies the information to become and stay competitive.

Not a complete reprint

As a child I was a York Bar Bell weight lifter. My picture appears in the original issue on page 209. In the reprint you sold me it has been omitted although the text is shown. You should warn buyers that they are not getting the real thing. I AM UPSET!!!!! I thought I was buying the book you advertised not an edited edition.

Solid book

Don't let the raw art of the cover deceive you: this is a very good book. It complements Samir Husni's Launch your Magazine, with solid information on the commercial side of a magazine: how to study your market before you launch that dream magazine, what circulation is (and how to target for your audience), how to estimate your fixed and variable publishing costs (and how to balance them with your estimated revenues so as to break-even and then make a profit), and lots of other details. There are a few obvious pieces of info, but I read it twice, and marvelled at the insights and expertise which Cheryl Woodard offers us for a bargain price. Now I guess I'll read it a third time.

Transforms Your Publishing Idea into a Business

I must disagree with the comments made by the reader from Bremerton, WA. The book is not intended to teach the process of conducting interviews and writing articles and creating a layout. If that is the kind of book you need, I suggest "Make a Zine" by Bill Brent. The very first line of Woodard's introduction states "this book is a step-by-step guide to the business side of publishing". In my opinion, Woodard does a fantastic job of just that. Based on the tips and methods presented in this book, I have prepared a business plan for a publication and will actually begin printing a mag in the near future. The financial section of the book was clearly presented and should be easy enough for anyone from any discipline to grasp if they work at it. However, the true value of this book is in the development of ad and subscription revenue and strategy creation. Great read, very informative and relevant.

Early in 1983, Time, Inc. launched a new magazine, TV-Cable Week, which promised to provide state-of-the-art programming information to cable owners across the country. Six months later the magazine folded, at a staggering $47 million loss. The author, who had been a senior editor on TV-Cable Week's staff, spent the following two years interviewing key players in the venture, and has produced this account of its rise and fall. The original concept, Byron reports, grew out of Time's felt need for control in the cable industry and credibility on Wall Street. When TV-Cable Week failed to attract distributors, and its losses surpassed projections, Time's corporate leaders abandoned the project they had not market tested. Byron tells an engrossing and plausible behind-the-scenes tale of heroes, villains, secret agendas and suppressed memos, and concludes that when corporate decision makers become preoccupied with profits in disregard of their customers, the result is disaster. Terrific story of an incredible bomb of a magazine

Christopher Byron is an excellent business writer, and in The Fanciest Dive he tells the HBS case study-worthy story of the $50 million failure of Time Inc's ill-fated TV-Cable Week. It is not to be missed, and 22 years later there are still ample lessons to be gleaned from the tale. Business readers will not be disappointed.

the male kitty kelley - who makes his rise on the ashes of others... a lot of talented editorial went into TV CABLE WEEK and came out of it (notably Lorenzo Carcaterra - SLEEPERS author - incredible book, devastatingly incredible movie... not to mention Graydon SPY/ VANITY FAIR Carter) -
What The World Needs a lot less of... is these folks who [Wayne's World] "aren't worthy" to evaluate, judge or even (so subjectively) report on others' endeavors or lives until they take a closer look at their own... sad, but true.
