About the Author

Theresa Stack is an Associate Professor with MT Tech, she is a Certified Professional Ergonomist and a Certified Safety Professional. Theresa has over nineteen years of professional hands-on experience in occupational safety, health and ergonomics. Theresa provided technical program management and abatement consultation support to the DoN for twelve years. Theresa continues to instruct for various universities and consult.

Lee T. Ostrom, PhD, has worked in the fields of risk assessment, industrial safety, ergonomics, and human factors for over thirty-five years. A Certified Professional Ergonomist and Certified Safety Professional, he has been an Associate Dean and Academic Director and Full Professor University of Idaho, Idaho Falls. He has authored or co-authored two other books on ergonomic and risk topics and has authored over 75 papers and conference proceedings.

Cheryl A. Wilhelmsen, PhD, is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Idaho, Idaho Falls. She has been the director of the Industrial Technology BS degree program. She has also taught for APUS/AMU and consults with NASA Ames in the area of aviation inspection. In her thirty year career, she has conducted hundreds of ergonomic assessments and risk assessments from offices to nuclear hot cells.

This book is a classic that all sci-fi fans should read.

C. L. Moore garnered praise for her work in a time when women did not write science fiction. Her stories were powerful and poignant; her heroes and heroines were complex, well crafted individuals. She struck the perfect balance between adventure, science fiction, fantasy and mystery.
Northwest Smith is one of her more interesting heroes. He's an earthman who cannot return home and wanders the galaxy making the only living he can as a hired criminal. He's managed to become one of the best, and his employment continually sends him to the strangest most magical parts of the universe. Join in his adventures against the age old forces of the universe, which are often reminiscent of mythological tales.
This book is a classic that all sci-fi fans should read.

Fine Stories -- But Ration Them Out

"Shambleau", the opening story of this series, was Moore's first sale and made her reputation. With a prelude that established a back story of ancient alien civilizations on Venus and Mars and a second space age of Man, it established a romantic setting for Moore to drop her outlaw hero Smith into. Mix in prose probably about as sensual and erotic as could be published in Weird Tales at the time and some explicit ancient Earth mythology, and a popular series was born.

And it's still a good, fine story. Unfortunately, it also established a formula pretty closely followed for eight out of the other nine stories in this book. So as not to spoil the enjoyment of the other stories, I won't spell out that formula, but I will say that what awed readers of Weird Tales as they were parceled out mostly from 1933-1936 will probably cloy your literary palate the way too much of a fine dessert will. Do not read these stories all at once.

Two other warnings are in order. First, this collection was first published as the limited hardcover Scarlet Dream in 1981. Second, I have found out that it seems to omit two Northwest Smith stories. You will find the whole series in the cunningly titled Northwest of Earth: The Complete Northwest Smith (Planet Stories Library).

Good Ole Fashioned Space Opera

Northwest Smith is an Earthman with a scarred face and pale eyes who dresses in worn spaceman's leathers and who packs a blaster at his hip.* He is frequently accompanied by the rotund Venusian, Yarol. (C.L. Moore states that his name was an anagram of her favorite model of typewriter.) Both are outlaws, frequently hunted by the Space Patrol. And both have met their share of exotic and deadly aliens around the solar system.

_Northwest Smith_ (1981) is an assemblage of nine N.S. novelettes and one vignette by C.L. Moore. The full length adventures were published in _Weird Tales_ between 1933 and 1936. The vignette, "Song in a Minor Key," is from _Fantastic Universe_ in 1957. It is Smith's reflections about how he left his girl friend and columned house for a life of crime. It is the least of the stories in the book, but not a bad epilogue.

"Shambleau" was Moore's first published story and Smith's first adventure. Smith rescues a female alien from a bloodthirsty mob. The alien proves to be seductive, gorgonish, and vampish. Smith almost meets his match. The story created a sensation among readers of _Weird Tales_, with its rounded characters and sensuous scenes.

"Shambleau" set the pattern of a blend of space opera and myth. Moore did not blatently repeat plots-- she was too good a writer for that-- but she did reuse the formula in her later stories. "Black Thirst" recounts a dangerous assignation between Smith and an aristocratic Minga maid in a Venusian palace. "The Tree of Life" depicts how Smith escapes from the Patrol only to fall into the clutches of a siren-like monster. "Scarlet Dream" opens with a scarf that sells just a little bit _too_ easily at a Martian market. In "Dust of Gods," Smith and Yarol go on a quest in Martian caverns-- and find more than they bargained for. In "Lost Paradise," we learn that strange races and dark secrets may be found in the parapets of New York City. In "Julhi," Smith falls into the hands of a cyclopean, serpentine witch. In "The Cold Gray God," a lovely Venusian Woman with a Past hires Smith to "recover" an object from a Spaceman's Rest. But things quickly become more complicated. And in "Yvala," N.S. and Yarol cross paths with a Circe-like enchantress.

Many of the stories feature "magic portals"-- doorways or entrances into caverns, palaces, or other dimensions. Smith is often told that there is no escape back through such portals. He usually finds a way nonetheless. But at the close of the story, the portal often collapses, separating one world from another. This is usually fortunate, since it isolates various unpleasant monsters from our own world.

Many of the stories have dreamlike or hypnotic sequences that add to the power of the tales. Here is Smith's night seduction by the _shambleau_:

The green eyes met his. He felt a perceptible shock, and a shudder rippled down his paralysed spine, leaving an icy numbness in its wake. He felt the goose-flesh rising. But that numbness and cold horror he scarcely realized, for the green eyes were locked in his in a long, long look that somehow presaged nameless things-- not altogether unpleasant things... (20)

And here is Smith locked in the hypnotic embrace of the Tree of Life:

By now the calling was so unbearably intense, so intolerably sweet that somehow in its very strength it set free a part of his dazed mind as it passed the limits of audible things and soared into ecstasies which no senses bound. (100)

Much of the action of "Scarlet Dream" occurs in a parallel dream world filled with scenes such as this:

There was no sunrise in that land. Lucid day brightened slowly over the breathing landscape, and grass and trees stirred with wakening awareness, rather horribly [horribly, because plants here are carnivorous] in the beauty of the morning. When Smith woke, he saw the girl coming up from the lake, shaking blue water from her orange hair. Blue droplets clung to the creaminess of her skin, and she was laughing and flushed from head to toe in the glowing dawn. (122)

And when Smith and Yarol are exposed to the dust of the gods, Smith sees this vision of the distant past:

He thought he saw mighty landscapes ringed by such mountains as none of today's world know... he thought he saw a whiter sun than has shone for eons, lighting a land where rivers thundered between green banks... thought he saw many moons parading across a purple night wherein shone constellations that haunted him with familiarity in the midst of their strangeness... saw a green star where red Mars should be, and a far pin-prick of white where the green point that is Earth hangs. Cities reeled past across the crystal darkness in shapes stranger than any that history records. (165)

All in all, old fashioned space opera at its best. And while that phrase might be trite, I daresay that it is accurate.

Excellent Resource

This is a very practical guide to mediation. It's incredible beneficial to have the video illustration. The illustrations in both the book and video, show application of the various styles mediators use to be effective. The video also illustrates how mediators utilize styles sometimes that are not appropriate or as effective - - that's very beneficial.

The book is well written and video is well done. The video is a little dated now, but the content is on target and realistic. The video provides various scenarios in mediation. It provides typically 3 mediators and how they mediate the same situation, which illustrates various styles.

If someone is serious about honing their mediation skills, this is an excellent resource.

could have been.....

have read and re-read several of cameron danes books greys awakening, a fostered love, something new. to see a new title i was excited, though at us$8 and only 1 review.

this could have been so much better, whether by an editor removing the over descriptions, the usage of the same phrasing, word for word, a chapter later. beta readers should have had the author tighten up, or outright object to some of the depictions (is that their job? i don't know, but i think that first readers should point out flaws in the flow of a story) for me 4 years of friendship & care, there should have been some making love not just effing. every single time. there was none.

i tried to go back too that first sentence that sent me over the edge of over description but i can't find it something about long black tendril's looping around his soul, or voice like rust, or....maybe i should of kept a notebook of them.

i invested an evening, then persevered a morning to get there, to booker & jed's hea. doubt i will read again.

Lots of Feels

4 Stars. I love Cameron Dane, and am a huge fan. I have read every book I could get my hands on and devoured and cherished them all.

The pacing was perfect. We meet Booker at 19 and he spends the next four years growing up. We see bits and pieces of Booker as he matures and struggles to hide his feelings for Jed. I think this was handled beautifully. Jed beginning to feel tingles of awareness of Booker was also lovely and exciting.

I don't usually dissect a book when I review, but this one has me trying to identify why I didn't fall head over heels for this book. I love angsty reads, if it makes me cry my tush off then it's practically a shoe in for my comfort food shelf. This book made me cry, ugly cries - a few times! Buuuut... *shrugs* I get that Jed had to face some really tough truths about himself - that would knock anyone on their ass. I agree everyone reacts differently to scary shit. Yet I had a hard time with how Jed went from alpha strong guy to needy and tragic. I got tired of the storm/black clouds metaphor and wanted to shake Jed and tell him to get a grip, and pull up his big boy pants. Which is awful, cause I'm normally the most sympathetic person you'll meet.

Booker though, gosh, I think I'm in love with him. To watch him grow and mature and handle some tough kicks and to keep going after Jed, his love - was wonderful. He learned to be strong when Jed could not, he tried to always put what was best for Jed first - even when he didn't have enough experience to know the right course. There is nothing sexier than watching someone do what needs to be done, even when it hurts. In the end love does conquer all and I loved the rock solid HEA.

A bit disappointing...

I'm a huge Cameron Dane fan. She's one of the authors who got me interested in the m/m genre to begin with, and I count several of her books in my top ten list of favorites. However, I was a bit disappointed in this one. So much so, in fact, that there were times I wondered if it was really the same author!

The concept of the story is interesting and the characters are well-rounded and beautifully flawed, which I think is one of Cameron Dane's strengths as a writer, but I felt like I was reading a first draft! (One particular paragraph even sounded like notes an author would make and not actual story!)

It was SO LONG!

I can usually read a Cameron Dane story in one sitting but this book took me three whole days to get through. I started skimming at one point because I felt like I'd heard it all before. It was slow and dragged horribly in several places, even during the sex scenes! The epilogue was way too long as well.

There are some major problems with over-description and repetitive words/phrases. One particular word has shown up in other stories, but I've always been able to overlook that as a quirk. In this one though, it appears SO many times, and sometimes twice in the same paragraph. It drove me nuts.

I have to wonder if this book was edited at all. I mean a serious, professional edit - not just letting friends read it and give feedback. I've done some editing for authors before, and the urge to get out my red pen and start marking this book up was almost overwhelming at times.

I'm disappointed in this story and it's not one I will be reading again. A good edit and a little bit of tweaking would do wonders here. I hope that happens.

If you've not read Cameron Dane before, please don't start with this one. She has so many fantastic books out there (Grey's Awakening, The Quinn Security Series), but this is just not one of them.

About the Author
Lokenath Debnath is Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in pure mathematics from the University of Calcutta, and obtained D.I.C. and Ph.D. degrees in applied mathematics from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London. He was a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge and has had visiting appointments to several universities in the United States and abroad. His many honors and awards include two Senior Fulbright Fellowships and an NSF Scientist award to visit India for lectures and research. Dr. Debnath is author or co-author of several books and research papers in pure and applied mathematics, and serves on several editorial boards for scientific journals. He is the current and founding Managing Editor of the International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences.

Piotr Mikusinski received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1983, he became visiting lecturer at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he spent two years. He is currently a member of the faculty in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. His main research interests are the theory of generalized functions and real analysis. He has published many research articles and is co-author with his father, Jan Mikusinski, of An Introduction to Analysis: From Number to Integral.

Good book to teach yourself this interesting subject

I'm a statistician who has been using Part 1 of this book to teach myself the basics of Hilbert space theory. So far, I've been very pleased with it.
I've only run into one argument that assumed a fact that wasn't made fairly plain earlier in the development (for Corollary 4.6.1, I had to resort to Rudin's Functional Analysis text to learn why everywhere-defined positive operators on Hilbert spaces are bounded). Functional analysis seems to be a subject where you'll want to have a few different texts on hand in case what one author considers obvious is not so obvious to you!
Nice features of this book include
--an interesting proof of the Banach-Steinhaus theorem that uses a clever Diagonalization Theorem instead of the Baire Category theorem
--an entire chapter introducing the Lebesgue integral and developing its properties without auxiliary concepts such as measure: I found this chapter to be an interesting alternative way to look at the Lebesgue integral. My only quibble with it is that it quotes a version of Fatou's lemma that only applies to functions with limits (almost everywhere). In probability theory, Fatou's lemma is often applied on liminf's and limsup's of functions that don't have limits
--including the Lebesque integral chapter, a total of four solid chapters that develop the theory systematically and clearly enough for careful readers to follow. These comprise Part 1, which I'm almost finished with.
--five chapters with applications. I've only skimmed these, but together they really make this book seem like a terrific value. There's a chapter on applications to integral and differential equations, one on generalized functions and PDEs (e.g. distribution theory), a really interesting looking chapter on Quantum Mechanics, a chapter on wavelets that includes a terrific and concise section with historical remarks and a chapter on optimization problems, including the Frechet and Gateaux differentials, which comprise one of my major motivations for reading this book
--answers to selected exercises (HOORAY!)
This book can be used as the primary text for people who want to acquire a good understanding of Hilbert space theory so that they can use it to solve applied problems: at least, that's how I'm trying to use it! This book is a good value for scientists and engineers.

Very good book

Lokenath Debnath, like many authors from India, I am finding, write solid mathematical texts. These texts tend to be well-organized, clear, and do not leave out or fail to emphasize important concepts. The proofs are easy to understand. It does not take a week just to read a few pages.
This book by Debnath, is a good example of a book fitting the above criteria. It is an excellent book for self-study of Hilbert spaces, Fourier Transforms and other subjects in Functional Analysis. I found it to be a useful supplement to Folland's "Real Analysis" which I used as a 1st-year graduate student in mathematics. In fact, this book saved me a few times, when I had to figure out solutions to difficult homework excercises. One example comes to mind is a homework assignment (I think that it was out of Folland's book) involving Rademacher and Walsh functions, which are covered in this book. I also found this text for useful in studying for my candidacy examination.
In summary, this book is would make an excellent addition to your library. (If you are also interested in the subject of elliptic functions, then "Elliptic and Associated Functions with Applications" by Debnath and M. Dutta (World Press Private Ltd., Calcutta, 1965), may interest you. It is, like the above text, excellent, but very difficult to find!)

Great Addition for Spanish Students in High School

This is a wonderful novel for Spanish I or II students in High School. I could even use it with 7th and 8th graders, I believe. We use it during the summer to keep their Spanish abilities active, and also to build confidence and comprehension. This book does many things for a student: 1) builds vocabulary 2) improves comprehension level 3) motivates students to find out "what happens" 4) provides a new way to increase Spanish knowledge.

As a teacher of ages 3 to 18 year olds, I use excerpts from these books here and there, and use them for a Summer Spanish reading program each summer. Great idea and execution!

About the Author
Diane Trister Dodge, founder and president of Teaching Strategies, Inc., is the author of numerous books, articles, and training materials on early childhood education. She is the lead author on all of Teaching Strategies books, including the popular The Creative Curriculum®...series.
After earning a Master's degree from Bank Street College of Education, Diane earned 30 years of experience working with teachers and administrators first as a kindergarten teacher, and then as the education coordinator for a Head Start program in rural Mississippi. Her experiences in the field have taught her the value of curriculum and training materials that articulate a clear philosophy and practical approach to meaningful learning. Her belief that curriculum and assessment are intracately linked led to the development of The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum and The Creative Curriculum Developmental Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3-5. She has also written many books for parents including Building Your Baby's Brain, Reading Right from the Start, and A Parent's Guide to Early Childhood Education.
Diane is a renowned speaker and trainer, and a former member of the Governing Board of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). She currently serves on the Board of the Center for the Child Care Work Force and other local Washington, DC organizations.

Laura J. Colker is the author of numerous articles and books on early childhood education. At Teaching Strategies, she has co-authored The Creative Curriculum for Infants & Toddlers, The Creative Curriculum for Preschool and The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3-5. She has designed curriculum, training materials, and videos for teachers and supervisory staff, and story books, videos, software, and videodiscs for children. Dr. Colker conducts training and teaches courses on child development issues throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Cate Heroman is the Senior Associate and Staff Development Specialist at Teaching Strategies, Inc, and has committed herself to the field of education for almost 30 years. She was a early childhood education teacher in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Louisiana. For nearly a decade, Cate served as an administrator at the Louisiana Department of Education, providing leadership, training, technical assistance and support in the areas of early childhood and elementary education. Cate has also co-authored several books, including The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, 4th Edition, The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3-5, Connecting Content, Teaching and Learning, and Building Your Baby's Brain.

Great Book!

THis is one of the best books for helping a teacher to set up a classroom. It has lists of things to place in areas of your room. It has a great lay out of interest areas. I love the way it reads like a text book, it helps to be straight forward! I really love the fact that it leans more towards a play based center. Great tools also. Such as daily lesson plans and weekly planning forms.
If you are just starting out as a Early Childhood teacher or looking for some AMAZING ideas for changing your classroom this is the book you want! It will break down each area in easy to understand and follow chapters. It has helped me with room arrangement ideas! I wsa reminded of things I used to have but phased out and really needed to bring back, open art area, home like feel to the room and lots of added toys to each area.

Good Book to learn from

This is a good book, but it would have been nice to receive a hardback book like I ordered. This was the second time ordering a HARDBACK book and getting a paperback copy. Very upsetting. I have sent it back twice now.

Best buy for my money!

I am very pleased with my purchases of books for early learning. The classes I was enrolled in were expensive enough, I saved a lot of $ by ordering amazon. They said like new, They all looked NEW to me. very, very pleased and this is the only way I would ever purchase a book again. I would highly recommend it.
